Top Cybersecurity Predictions of 2025

ACTFORE’s Christian Geyer is pleased to have been published as an expert commentator in ITPro Today on January 23, 2025 in the article, Cybersecurity Trends & Predictions 2025.

From quantum preparedness to AI’s dual impact on cybersecurity, IT leaders and industry insiders share their cybersecurity trends and predictions for 2025. Two of many of the predictions are shared here.

GenAI Becomes Cybercriminals’ Key Weapon

In 2024, we saw the rapid evolution of generative AI, but 2025 will usher in a seismic shift in how threat actors weaponize it to orchestrate large-scale cyber attacks. I think the next major breach will be a direct result of generative AI models autonomously identifying vulnerabilities, crafting deceptive phishing campaigns, and even bypassing detection systems. GenAI is no longer just a tool; it’s often the single most important key for attackers. We can anticipate AI-driven malware capable of learning and adapting in real-time during an attack. While organizations increasingly integrate generative AI into their operations to drive efficiency, this reliance introduces significant risks. The potential exploitation of internal knowledge could lead to catastrophic consequences. The technology is here, and it’s no longer a matter of if such incidents will occur, but when. The stakes have never been higher.

Watch for Surge in Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Attacks on Western Nations

If peace is brokered in Eastern Europe under the new administration, it might lead to a surge in state-sponsored cyber attacks against Western nations. With Russia losing ground in Ukraine and U.S. aid totaling nearly $183 billion, the likelihood of peace being brokered has increased. If the war in Ukraine ends or diminishes, Russia may (re)allocate its massive 13.5 trillion-ruble budget (over $145 billion) to fund nation-state-backed hacking campaigns against the U.S. and other countries. While Russia hasn’t paused its virtual warfare, a shift in focus could escalate attacks. This underscores a critical need for countries and organizations to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses and investments.
